History has heard this exact tone before. Every single time.

Here's the pattern, and why it matters for anyone building with AI today.

On the internet (1998): A Nobel Prize–winning economist predicted its economic impact would end up no bigger than the fax machine's. Today, roughly 5.5 billion people are online.

On the iPhone (2007): Microsoft's CEO said it had zero chance of gaining real market share. Apple has since sold over 2.3 billion of them — the most profitable product ever made.

On cloud computing (2008): Oracle's own CEO called it "gibberish" and "insane." Cloud is now a roughly $700-billion-a-year industry. Oracle sells about $34 billion of it themselves.

On personal computers (1977): The founder of Digital Equipment Corporation saw no reason anyone would want one at home. There are now close to 2 billion in use. DEC doesn't exist anymore.

On the telephone (1876): Western Union dismissed it internally as too flawed to matter. Bell's company went on to become one of the largest corporations in history.

On radio (1897): Lord Kelvin, President of the Royal Society, said it had no future. Within 40 years, it sat in nearly every home on Earth.

On flight (1903): The New York Times estimated a working flying machine was up to ten million years away. The Wright brothers flew 69 days later.

Even Socrates thought writing would ruin human memory. We only know that because someone wrote it down.

Sound familiar? It should. It's the same confidence, the same tone, the same certainty that history just handed us dozens of examples of getting spectacularly wrong.

None of this proves AI will change everything. But it does prove one thing clearly: being an expert has never made anyone immune to underestimating a new technology.
